New Obsession. Escape Rooms.

I have a new obsession.
Escape Rooms. I just love getting into new stuff.

It’s a simple concept really. You are locked in a room for an hour. You solve clues to get out.
Given my love of competitions, murder mysteries and make believe, this really is my idea of heaven. Columbo has always been my hero. This lets me pretend to be a god damn detective!

I weirdly came across the world of the Escape Room when I was travelling in Belgrade, Serbia over Easter.  Adrenalin Escape Rooms are the ‘Number 1 activity to do’ in Belgrade. The reviews were all excellent and the description got me immediately pumped…

Welcome to the ultimate real-life escape room experience in Belgrade! In teams of 2-6 you are locked in a themed room and you need to find hidden clues, solve mysteries and puzzles in order to escape the room in 60 minutes. Our rooms are unique creations inspired by our history so you won’t be able to experience them anywhere else! It’s a fun and unforgettable experience not to be missed! For bookings, please visit our website.

So me and one of my besties Billy Bob (Bilijana) turn up and we can’t find it. We think we have the wrong address. It’s like the game had already begun. We called them to learn we had to go into the big building and up the dodge stairs to what looked to be a reworked apartment, ex council block style with an Eastern European twist. We met the host who let us know the room theme was around ex Yugoslavian leader, Josef Tito. There were rumour he was a womaniser and cheating on his wife. We had 60 minutes to find out the truth before he got back!

Long story short we didn’t escape! It was fucking hard! We even had help. The room was themed as if we were in Tito’s office. There was a desk, pictures, a chess board, books, a cabinet. You get the picture. There were locks everywhere. You had to solve puzzles with cards, and mazes and liquid and rulers and secret holes and sticks and popping. I mean there is really too much fun to be had.

Adrenalin Escape rooms. No luck this time. Sad face.

Billy and I were so pumped afterwards, that 3 hours later we were doing another one. Nerd alert. This time the theme VOODOO, part of the Escape Mania company about 30 minutes away. We had 60 minutes to remove the voodoo spell. This included scary voodoo music riddles, skeletons, maze solving and UV lights. FUN. Although walking into a pitch black room was not fun. I couldn’t do it! This time we did escape though. But we did have a bit of help to be honest.

The best bit of all. This is a growing global phenomena. They are all over the world. Asia, Eastern Europe, Australia and London.

So one week later I convinced my flat mates to give it a go in London. To be honest it didn’t feel as authentic as the ones from Belgrade. You could tell Escape Rooms is a franchise where they just spit out the same scenario in rooms right around the world. Don’t get me wrong it was still fun, but I really liked how local the Tito theme felt to the area we were in.

So yeah it’s a bit nerdy. But I fucking love it. Google ‘Escape Rooms’ to find one near you! They are so booked out in London you have to wait weeks for a slot. And with all this in mind  I’m looking to start my own! Watch this space.
